Today, however, you would be much better off learning how to write an ebook than a printed book, in view of the environmental problems facing our planet.

Starting At The End, Ending At The Start

One misconception that some people have when they first approach the task of writing an ebook is that there is a rigid progression to how the parts of the ebook should be written – starting with the title and ending with the conclusion.
This is not entirely true and insisting on such rigidity when writing an ebook will only serve to frustrate you and make the task more difficult.

Of course, that is not to say that you should not have some structure to your writing, and this usually comes in the form of an outline of the content. Before you start, you should have some idea of the different sections, and what each section will contain in general.
That aside, however, I have found that starting with the ending can be very helpful. This is because thinking through the ending will also give you a much clearer picture of where the rest of the content should go and the direction that it should head in.

There is certainly no need to come up with the perfect title first, and it is often only at the end of writing the ebook that you realize just what the title should be to sum up the entirety of the content.

Write Purposefully

No matter what your reasons for writing an ebook, those reasons are there and you should never lose sight of them as you write. Too often, I have seen people set out to write ebooks to accomplish very specific goals, but get carried away writing about subject matter that was not even remotely related to those goals.

A good way to stay on track is to think about your target audience. Who are you writing the ebook for? What do you want to tell them and what do you want to achieve through the content of your ebook?
These are questions that should always be at the top of your mind as you write. Every so often, look back over what you have written and think about whether your content answers those questions.

By referring to your original purpose in writing the ebook, you will save yourself from falling into the trap of going off topic. Before I discovered how to write purposefully, I found myself having to delete large chunks of content simply because it had nothing to do with what I actually wanted to write about.

Take The First Step

The very first time I tried to write an ebook, I sat staring at my computer screen for over an hour, trying to think of the perfect first sentence. Then I sat there for another hour thinking of the perfect sentence to follow the first one. Writing this way is an enormous waste of time.

The best way to start is to simply start writing. At this point, you will already have an outline of your content and some idea of what you want your ebook to look like. Even if you simply start with your outline and start putting down bullet points, this is a better start than writing nothing.

Busting Through Writer’s Block

Within the world of writing, there is something known as writer’s block. This describes the situation when you are halfway through your work, and all of a sudden, you simply cannot get another word out. This is an extremely frustrating situation to be in. Many people who have little or no experience with writing attempt to fight writer’s block head-on, staying doggedly in front of their computer and not moving until they manage to write more. Writer’s block is your mind’s way of telling you that it needs a break, however, and fighting it head-on is usually ineffective.

Instead, get up and away from your computer and do something completely different to refresh yourself. Go outside and get some fresh air, do some exercise, bake, read a comic – do something you enjoy. By the time you come back, the block will probably have vanished and you will be able to get back to work.

The Final Step of How to Write an Ebook

Once your ebook is finished, you need to get it into the hands of your readers. There are a few things you need to address before being able to do so. The first is price – how much will your ebook cost? Some people choose to give their ebook away for free, as the publicity that they get will offset the cost of writing the ebook.

If you are not inclined to give your ebook away for free, then you should put yourself in the shoes of a potential customer, and think about how much you would reasonably pay for your ebook.
Try to avoid overpricing your ebook, as many first-time writers tend to overestimate the amount that potential customers are willing to pay. If you are unsure of what your price should be, try to take your cue from other ebooks in the same field.
